Do I need a license to sell a cover song on HitVocals?
Selling a vocal on HitVocals does not qualify as a "release" of the song and is more akin to being paid a recording session fee, therefore in general, and assuming the lyrics and melody have not been altered, no license is required to sell a cover version on the HitVocals platform.
Note however, that if the lyrics have been modified or melody changed in a substantial way, then you will likely require permission from the original writers and/or their publisher and should therefore seek advice from a music lawyer in this situation.
HitVocals is not responsible for the artist failing to get any such permission where required.
Can I add my name as a songwriter?
In general, the songwriting credit for a song belongs to the original songwriters and copyright owners of the song. These are the individuals who first wrote the lyrics and music for the song and are entitled to receive publishing royalties for its use. If you create a cover version of a song, you are creating a new recording of the song and as a cover artist, you do not have the right to claim a songwriting credit.
However, if you make significant changes or alterations to the original song that go beyond a standard cover version, you may be able to claim a songwriting credit for your contribution. For example, if you rewrite the lyrics or significantly change the melody of the song, you may be able to claim a songwriting credit. In these cases, it is important to consult with a music industry professional or a lawyer to ensure that you are properly credited and that you are complying with all relevant laws and regulations.
In general, it is important to respect the intellectual property rights of songwriters and to properly credit and license their work when creating cover versions or using their songs in any other way. This helps to ensure that songwriters are fairly compensated for their work.
